As product manager for digital receipt by fiskaly and fiscalization expert, Stefan Kohlbacher is very familiar with the details on the topic. In this article, he clarifies some of the myths about the implementation of digital receipts that are often mentioned in public discussions.

## Myth 1: Digitizing receipts is costly and time-consuming

The common assumption that the introduction of digital receipts involves a high financial effort for merchants and is therefore reserved for large market players is not true. Solutions for digital receipts are not expensive. Moreover, existing investment subsidies in the area of digitization, such as those provided by [Austria Wirtschaftsservice](https://wirtschaftsagentur.at/foerderungen/aktuelle-programme/wien-digital-110/) and the [Vienna Business Agency](https://www.aws.at/en/aws-digitalization/), can be used. In addition, it should not be forgotten that the use of digital receipts definitely saves costs on hardware as well as in operations.

## Myth 2: Customers must provide their data when using digital receipts

Completely anonymous transmission by scanning QR codes is possible every time and at a low cost. The fact that the collection and storage in connection with personal data (e.g. customer apps, etc.) brings further advantages for retailers, but also for consumers, is of course different matter.

## Myth 3: Digital receipts increase waiting times at the checkout

In some industries, payment processing at the checkout would be significantly slowed down. This may be the case if personal data first has to be captured in a time-consuming manner, but not if the delivery of a digital receipt works via QR code or, even better, with direct banking integration.

## Myth 4: Digital receipts are not automatically sent to the tax office

[A legally compliant receipt issuing obligation within the framework of the Austrian Registrierkassensicherheitsverordnung (RKSV)](https://www.bmf.gv.at/en/topics/taxation/cash-register/cash-register-receipt-issuing-obligation.html) is also ensured by digital receipts. It is also true that every cash register is directly connected to the Ministry of Finance via an interface, but this is only used to register the cash register and its security devices, as well as their configuration. A transmission per transaction or a receipt does not take place this way.

> The proposed limit of 30 euros for the receipt issuing obligation therefore represents a challenge for all parties involved in my view: The elimination of a large volume of receipts also means the elimination of an important aspect of the previously envisaged audit cycle and can trigger a significantly higher time requirement for both the tax authorities and the merchant, as well as a potential disruption of business operations.

The Spanish tax system is intricate, featuring two tax regimes: the ordinary and the foral. Within the foral regime, there are four distinct tax authorities. One covers Navarra's region, while the other three correspond to the various provinces in the Basque Country: Araba, Gipuzkoa, and Biscay. As for the ordinary regime, the AEAT (Spanish Central Tax Administration) is responsible for taxation across the rest of the country.

To align with the latest European guidelines aimed at preventing tax fraud, digitizing processes, and reducing delayed payments, **Spain has introduced several new laws**. These include TicketBAI in the Basque Country to combat tax fraud, the national Anti-fraud law with VeriFactu, and the 'Crea y Crece' law, which encourages the compulsory use of electronic invoices for B2B transactions. These regulations will work alongside the existing Suministro Inmediato de Información (SII) system.

## What does fiscalization mean?

Fiscalization is the **seamless recording of transactions and anti-tamper protection of transaction logs in POS systems**. The requirements are set by the legislation of individual countries or administrative regions.

In simpler terms, it's a method to ensure that all companies follow the same rules, promoting transparency in both business and government finances. It also establishes consistent procedures for handling invoices and tax reporting.

## Fiscal legislations in Spain from 2023 to 2026

### ​1️⃣​ · Fiscalization in the Basque Country: TicketBAI

[TicketBAI is the fiscal system to avoid tax fraud](https://www.fiskaly.com/signes/ticketbai) promoted by the three Basque provincial tax authorities and the Basque government. Sending all the invoices issued for the sale of goods or services electronically to the tax authorities is mandatory. In the provinces of Araba and Gipuzkoa, TicketBAI is already mandatory for all companies and professionals. Companies, freelancers, consultancies and professional law firms must manage their invoicing in compliance with the legal requirements set out by TicketBAI. In Biscay, compliance with TicketBAI is included in a more complex regulation called Batuz, and the compulsory deadline for compliance will be 2026.

#### What is TicketBAI about?

The fundamental procedure for complying with TicketBAI (you'll also come across it in its abbreviated form, TBAI) operates as follows:

* Any individual or legal entity affected by TicketBAI must use a POS or billing software that ensures that invoices or purchase tickets issued cannot be manipulated.
* All invoices - simplified and complete - must include two key components: the unique TBAI identification code and a QR code.
* The anti-fraud software shall generate electronically signed TicketBAI XML files for each transaction and send them immediately to the tax authorities.
* The anti-fraud software has to be registered as TBAI guarantor in the official registry of the Basque authorities.

#### TicketBAI implementation timeline

The implementation process of TicketBAI started with a voluntary period in 2020. Each province set different deadlines for the implementation of TicketBAI, with the initial expectation that it would be fully implemented by 2024 in the three Basque provinces. In Araba and Gipuzkoa, 99% of the companies are already TBAI compliant. Due to the difficulty of Biscayan companies and professionals to adapt to Batuz before 2024, [the period of mandatory implementation of TicketBAI was postponed from 2024 to 2026 in Biscay](https://www.fiskaly.com/blog/biscay-extends-ticketbai-implementation-to-2026), in a staggered way.

### 2️⃣ · Fiscalization in Spain: Anti-fraud law (Veri*Factu) in Spain

Elsewhere in Spain, a regulation similar to TicketBAI has been proposed, known as the Anti-fraud law. It's designed to prevent companies in Spain from tampering with their accounting and invoicing. However, this law is not in effect yet. The final technical details and the timeline for implementation are expected to be released before 2024.

#### What are the Spanish Anti-fraud law and Veri*Factu?

The [Anti-fraud law 11/2021 of July 9th](https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-2021-11473) advocates for measures to prevent and fight fiscal fraud, with specific mention of the use of VeriFactu softwares. According to the law, all invoicing software used in Spain must prevent the modification and deletion of records in the invoicing process and, furthermore, transmit all invoicing records to the National Tax Administration Agency (Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria).

Furthermore, the law establishes the **requirements of the VeriFactu Software**, which must be used by companies and professionals when issuing ordinary and simplified invoices in accordance with the new regulations. The word VeriFactu refers to "Verifiable invoice in the AEAT's electronic office" (in Spanish: “Factura verificable en la sede electrónica de la AEAT”). ​​For those who choose the option of using a VeriFactu software, they are expected to comply with all the requirements stated in the Anti-fraud Law.

The draft legislation for VeriFactu and the updates published on June 2022 establish the following **technical requirements**:

* An XML file is created for each transaction: one record for issuing the invoice and another one for the cancellation.
* Invoices will have to be chained, so that their trace can be verified in a sequence, preventing manipulation.
* At the moment, sending the registries to the tax administration will be voluntary for the taxpayer. However, the software must include this functionality and need to be able to send it upon request, as it may become necessary during an audit.
* A digital certificate is not yet required when the software issues all the invoicing registries to the tax administration. However, the electronic signature will be mandatory if the files are not automatically sent to the AEAT.
* Invoices include a QR code and the phrase “VERI*FACTU” (or the complete sentence “Factura verificable en la sede electrónica de la AEAT”) when all registries are automatically sent to the tax agency in a synchronous way. 

#### Anti-fraud law and Veri*factu implementation timeline

The most recent draft suggests that taxpayers can expect to utilize the Anti-Fraud Law starting from July 1st, 2024, although a slight delay is anticipated due to the government formation delay at the end of 2023.

Furthermore, the draft outlines that software developers will have a 9-month period from the publication of the final technical regulations to implement VeriFactu.

Currently, we are eagerly awaiting the release of regulations that will outline the technical specifications. These specifications will set the timelines for software developers, companies, and professionals to integrate VeriFactu.

### 3️⃣​ · Fiscalization for big companies: Immediate Supply of Information (*Suministro Inmediato de Información* or SII) 

The Immediate Supply of Information, commonly referred to as SII (its complete name in Spanish is Suministro Inmediato de Información), has been a compulsory tax control system in Spain since 2017. This system enables the real-time tracking of Value Added Tax (VAT) records, which can be accessed through the [AEAT's website (Spanish national tax authorities)](https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es/Sede/en_gb/inicio.html).

SII is mandatory for the following groups:

* Companies, businesses, and taxpayers with their tax headquarters in Spain, whose annual income exceeds €6 million
* Entities included in VAT groups
* Those registered for monthly VAT returns using the REDEME system

Furthermore, it's also possible for other companies and professionals to opt for voluntary participation in the SII.

#### SII technical requirements

The primary focus of the SII is the electronic declaration requirement for various types of information, including invoices issued and received, sent to the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) through the electronic record books.

The specific record books in question are as follows:

* Record book of invoices issued
* Record book of invoices received
* Record book of investment goods
* Record book of certain intra-Community transactions

In general, it's necessary to transmit this information to the relevant Tax Administration within a maximum of four working days from the issuance or receipt of the invoices. Unlike TicketBAI or VeriFactu, the AEAT also provides XML file structures and a dedicated communication process for this purpose, but it doesn't require the chaining of records, electronic signatures or software certification for managing the information transmission.

#### SII coexistence with TicketBAI and Veri*Factu

As mentioned earlier in this article, the Spanish tax system is known for its intricacies. This complexity arises from the coexistence of various tax authorities at both the regional and national levels, as well as the presence of diverse regulations that impact specific types of companies. Consequently, both TicketBAI and VeriFactu will operate alongside the SII.

### 4️⃣ · “Crea y Crece” law and e-invoice

[The 'Crea y Crece’ law (Law 18/2022 enacted on September 28, 2022)](https://www.boe.es/diario_boe/txt.php?id=BOE-A-2022-15818) was established with the objective of promoting digitalization, combating delayed payments within businesses and professionals, and enhancing management processes. One of its key provisions includes the implementation of electronic invoicing. This is the law you may have heard about, making **electronic invoices mandatory in Spain** from 2024.

#### What are the provisions of the 'Crea y Crece’ law regarding electronic invoicing?

According to its 12th article, the 'Crea y Crece’ law mandates that companies and self-employed individuals are required to generate and receive electronic invoices using service providers that ensure compatibility with the electronic invoicing formats specified in the law. 

This obligation pertains to business-to-business (B2B) transactions, provided that both the seller and the recipient are operating within Spain. To comply with this requirement, companies must use invoicing software that adheres to the provisions of the law, is registered as such with the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT), and ensures the proper connection to the public electronic invoicing platform where taxpayers' invoice records will be transmitted. As a result, electronic invoicing in this manner will apply to complete invoices and not simplified ones.

#### The commencement of mandatory electronic invoicing in Spain

Law 18/2022 stipulates that the technical specifications for electronic invoicing systems should be made public within six months of their approval. This originally implied an expected implementation date in March 2023. However, two rounds of public consultations were initiated, one in March and another in July 2023.

These public consultations are to be considered in the finalization of the official requirements. The precise date for their publication remains pending, but it's anticipated to occur in the last quarter of 2023.

Following the publication of the official requirements, companies with an annual turnover exceeding €8 million will have one year to incorporate the necessary modifications, while all other companies will be granted an additional year for preparation. Consequently, **the mandatory electronic invoicing obligation for transactions between B2B companies is anticipated to take effect starting in 2024.**

Exploring advantages of digital receipts in hospitality industry

One of the most frequently asked questions about the digital receipt is, "How does the receipt get on my device?" Issuing receipts by e-mail or SMS is one of the standard transmission methods. However, transmission via QR code is much more convenient and faster for consumers and merchants. Therefore, we distinguish between the two options of static and dynamic QR codes.

## QR code: Dynamic & Fast

The dynamic QR code is shown to the customer directly on the display of the POS device after payment. The customer scans it with the help of their smartphone and gets the receipt displayed directly in the device's browser. The dynamic QR code is individual for each transaction. It is regenerated and displayed each time after the payment is completed. A dynamic QR code's information can be changed as often as needed, even after it is created.

### **Pros & Cons**

* Pros: Simplified process for transactions for both merchant and consumer. Faster in completing the process.
* Cons: Requires a display to show the QR code. Possibility of other customers (unintentionally) scanning the QR code as well.

## QR Code: Static & Location Independent

A static QR code has a URL embedded in the code that cannot be changed once it is created. The process of issuing a digital receipt with a static QR code works like this:

### **Before payment**

1. When the QR code is scanned, the embedded URL takes the customer to a website where an automatically generated numeral code is displayed.
2. The merchant scans the code or enters it manually into the POS system and transfers it to the system when the digital receipt is created.

### **After payment**

3. Once the digital receipt is generated, the website is updated on the customer's device, and the digital receipt is displayed.

### **Pros & cons:**

* Advantages: No electronic display is needed at the checkout to show the QR code. Instead, the static QR code can be presented to the customer as a table display, sticker, or badge. Thus, there is no contradiction in the compatibility of electronic receipts when used with cash registers that only have one display. Furthermore, delivery via the static QR code guarantees unambiguous transmission to the target customer, eliminating the need for data protection and security questions. 
* Disadvantages: The scanning process with a static QR code on site is more complicated and takes longer than with a dynamic QR code (for merchants and consumers).

## Examples of good practice

In the hospitality industry, everything has to happen fast. During the payment request & process, guests quickly become impatient. This is where dynamic QR codes come in handy to speed up the process even more.

In the consumer goods sector, customers take more time to select the right product or to get advice. In many outlets (depending on size and turnover), stationary cash registers, which do not have an electronic display oriented toward the customer, are predominantly used. In order to support companies and professionals in the province, Biscay's tax authorities have decided to extend the implementation period of Batuz from 2024 to 2026. As you may know, [TicketBAI is a part of the extensive Batuz](https://www.fiskaly.com/blog/ticketbai-and-batuz-in-bizkaia) economic activity control strategy in Biscay.

The initial calendar stipulated that, in January 2024, all companies and professionals in the territory of Biscay would have to comply with the new TicketBAI regulations against tax fraud. However, as of August 2023, only 17% of companies have adapted their processes to comply with it, despite the tax incentives provided by the early implementation of this system.

That's why Biscay's tax authorities [have recognised the difficulty of maintaining the previous schedule](https://www.bizkaia.eus/es/web/comunicacion/noticias/-/news/detailView/25477), and they have extended the implementation dates from 2024 to 2026. Below you will find the new mandatory dates, established gradually for different types of companies and with adaptation periods of six months at a time.

## New TicketBAI implementation timeline in Biscay

* **1st January 2024:** corporate taxpayers who are not Micro-SMEs. In other words, companies with a turnover of more than €2 million of which only 13% of them have voluntarily adhered to Batuz to date.
* **1st July 2024:** micro-SMEs operating in the following activities: industrial, manufacturing, construction and transport, financial, legal, insurance, rental and other professional activities except for education and cultural activities. This group represents 50% of the business and professional sector of Biscay and, for the moment, only 21% of them have implemented Batuz and TicketBAI voluntarily. 
* **1st January 2025:** micro-SMEs operating hospitality and catering, trade, commerce, repair of movable goods, hairdressing and other personal services (legal entities and ERARs with PJ). This group represents almost 9% of the economic activity and 15% of them already comply with Batuz and TicketBAI.
* **1st July 2025:** micro-SMEs dedicated to hospitality and catering, trade, repair of movable goods, hairdressing and other personal services (in this case, natural persons and ERARs without PJ). They occupy 20% of the global Biscay’s activity and only 10% of them have voluntarily opted in so far. 
* **1st January 2026:** entities totally and partially exempt from corporation tax (Impuesto de sociedades); non-profit entities; and companies dedicated to agriculture, livestock and fishing, education, cultural services and the rest of taxpayers.

## Requirements in Bizkaia

The TicketBAI software in the billing or POS system must generate XML files for each transaction and sign them with a digital certificate. It also provides a QR code and ID code to print on the invoice. The invoices are chained by the software into a sequence so their trace can be verified in a sequence and the XML files are stored for an established period of time.

### XML Files differ in Bizkaia

The content of the XML files in Bizkaia slightly differs from the content in the other two provinces. For instance, sending the details of each line or the recipient's address is not mandatory.

### LROE

Besides implementing TicketBAI, taxpayers in Bizkaia will have to send the LROE books (Book of economic operation registries) to Bizkaia's Provincial Council. The TicketBAI XML files are included within the LROE books. The LROE books must be sent every trimester before April 25th, July 25th, October 25th, and January 31st, depending on when the transactions occurred.

## SII obligations in Bizkaia

In Bizkaia, TicketBAI and LROE replaces the SII. However, those companies already compliant with the SII system will have to keep sending their registries every four days (or according to SII deadlines).

## BATUZ with TicketBAI deadlines in Bizkaia

BATUZ and TicketBAI are initially implemented on a voluntary basis in Bizkaia before becoming mandatory for all activities at the same time. Here you find the deadlines:

## Fiscalization in Spain

In general, fiscalization aims to record all POS transactions while protecting them from manipulation, and archiving them. The tax office receives a complete sales tax statement as a result.

In the Basque Country provinces Araba, Gipuzkoa, and Bizkaia fiscalization requirements will be regulated through TicketBAI, which takes effect between 2021 and 2024. In the remaining regions of Spain, fiscalization requirements must be met with Veri*factu software, scheduled for 2024.

## TicketBAI

[TicketBAI (or TBAI) is a software-based fiscalization system](https://www.fiskaly.com/signes/ticketbai) that is being implemented in the Basque Country between 2021 and 2024 and enforces fiscalization requirements. In Bizkaia, TicketBAI is part of the larger control strategy BATUZ.

### Legal obligations

To comply with the legal requirements for TicketBAI, the taxpayer must have an internet connection, a billing software or program, and a digital certificate. This allows for the electronic generation of XML files, their submission to tax authorities, and the addition of identifier codes and QR codes to invoices.

Those affected by TicketBAI must use billing- or POS software that protects invoices from manipulation or deletion. If you have a legal address in the Basque Country and issue invoices or sales receipts, or if you sell software to Basque-based companies, TicketBAI will apply to you.

### Who is affected by TicketBAI?

TicketBAI is relevant to all natural and legal persons and entities who conduct economic activities within the Basque Tax Administration's jurisdiction related to personal or corporate income tax.

In accordance with the Economic Agreement established with the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (Law 12/2012, of May 23), this applies to those who issue invoices or sales receipts and have a legal address in the Basque Country.

## VeriFactu

For the remaining regions of Spain, fiscalization requirements will have to be complied with using [Veri*factu software](https://www.fiskaly.com/signes/verifactu), which is planned to be implemented in 2024. VeriFactu systems are invoicing softwares that comply with the requirements of the Spanish Anti-Fraud Law (Law 11/2021, of July 9) and communicate in real-time with the Spanish Tax Authority.

### Legal obligations

The exact legal obligations concerning Veri\*factu are yet to be defined, but it is expected that Veri\*factu softwares will have to be in place by July 2024. 

While technical specifications have not yet been released, the draft legislation mandates that invoices must contain a QR code and the term "Veri*factu" or "Factura verificable en la sede automática de la AEAT" (invoice verifiable in the AEAT - National Tax Agency). Currently, sending the registries to the tax authority is voluntary, but the software must have the capability to do so upon request, such as during an audit.

### Who is affected by VeriFactu?

VeriFactu compliance will be mandatory for companies and the self-employed across the entire Spanish territory and will be compatible with the specific TicketBAI regulations in the Basque Country.

Additionally, it appears that VeriFactu will not replace the SII system (Immediate Information Supply), but will include taxpayers who were not previously obligated to comply with the SII.

## fiskaly's Cloud TSS - on cloud 7

The [fiskaly SIGN products](/solutions) form the only, true cloud TSS solutions for the fiscalization of transactions of a POS system on the market. Certified in Germany until 2029 and 100% compliant with the law.
The big advantage of this solution is that merchants can purchase the TSSs via a monthly rental model - without any hardware at all. Another major advantage over a hardware solution is the reduced effort for the customer, as updates and certificate term extensions of the cloud TSSs run in the background and the customer is unaware of them. In the case of hardware TSSs, the hardware components have to be replaced after certain periods (3, 5 or a maximum of 7 years) or in the case of updates, which involves a great deal of effort and expense for the customer. **Details for technicians**
The Electronic Recording System (ERS) communicates with the TSS via the embedding interface (Secure Element API, SE-API) specified in [BSI TR-03151 and BSI TR-03151-AMT](https://www.bsi.bund.de/DE/Themen/Unternehmen-und-Organisationen/Standards-und-Zertifizierung/Technische-Richtlinien/TR-nach-Thema-sortiert/tr03151/tr03151_node.html) using a TLS connection. The SE-API is integrated into the SMAERS. The embedding interface is accessed via a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) based API. An RPC request is sent to an http endpoint of the embedding interface, which responds with an RPC response. The binding interface acts as a server here. The data of a request and a response are sent as protocol buffers.
The argument of a network failure is not a problem in the case of a cloud TSS. The legislator explicitly allows the electronic input system (cash register) to continue operating even if the technical security equipment is disrupted by a network failure. The checkout process continues and the receipt must contain the information about the TSS failure.

## Interaction of the solutions - TSE4CLOUD

The new concept 'TSE4CLOUD' developed by hokona and fiskaly combines hokona's SAP Customer Checkout POS system with the fiskaly SIGN DE product. In this way, the two IT expert companies create an all-round package for checkouts with fast integration, strong support, a know-how base and optimal legal compliance.
Simplified, the process of the concept runs as follows:

1. The transaction data created on the SAP Customer Checkout is communicated in encrypted form to fiskaly's cloud TSS. 2. In the second step, the security device signs the individual products and the receipt. 3. In the final step, the TSS sends the signed transaction back to the POS system.

The [French anti-waste law](https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/loda/id/JORFTEXT000041553759) (Law No. 2020-105 of 10 February 2020 or “Loi anti-gaspillage”), aimed at controlling waste and promoting a circular economy, has been in effect since August 1st, 2023. The law's enforcement date was originally set for January 1st, 2023, but postponed in order to give POS vendors more time to incorporate digital receipt functionalities into their software.

Hi, I am Stefan, originally from Salzburg, Austria. My professional background is quite diverse. I studied chemistry, then moved on to drug discovery and development, and while working at fiskaly, I got a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry with a focus on chemo-informatics and algorithm development. This links me back to fiskaly and my background in software development and engineering. 

### How did you start at fiskaly?

Having established analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, I started at fiskaly initially as a software developer, helping out with automation for billing and analytics. 

### Tell us about something that most people do not know about you.

The fact that most people do not know about me is that I really like 🫑green paprika🫑. Although I tried red and yellow paprika too, I especially enjoy green paprika. 

### What are your passions outside work? 

I really enjoy anything science-related, like neuroscience, mathematics, and physics. On the other side of the spectrum are topics like nutrition and sports science. This combines well with my other hobby, doing sports. I am particularly fond of rock climbing, CrossFit and everything that comes with resistance training. 

All my interests are quite interconnected, as neuroscience, physics, and also nutritional science can be used to optimize sports results. I also track my own health, performance statistics and nutritional values. Since I really enjoy data analytics, this connects very well. 

### What are you currently working on?

I am the Product Manager for the digital receipt. I figure out

That is currently one of the biggest challenges. We have multiple target groups, which we already know well from the fiscalization business. POS vendors are currently our main focus. By building the product for them, we can together deliver value to merchants and consumers.

At the same time, we need to consider the merchant and the consumer. They, in the end, will enjoy many of the advantages of the digital receipt. So it's always a bit of a struggle to figure out which direction is the best to take at any given moment. 

We work with hypotheses and assumptions, then test and validate them with our customers. Based on their feedback and their interaction with the product, we continue developing the best product for our customers’ needs. All in all, my team builds a digital receipt product to enjoy, use and love. 

### How can you explain to your granny what a fiskaly receipt is?

fiskaly receipt is our solution for providing digital receipts. Simply speaking, it replaces a printed receipt when you buy anything in a store. Digital receipts can easily be stored, organized, and found again via your phone.

A receipt right now is just a paper slip. With a digital receipt, it becomes an experience. An ecosystem that includes the merchant, the consumer, and external partners and services that all add value to the user.

### And what advantages can a customer enjoy while using a digital receipt?

There are quite a bunch. Of course, there is the environmental aspect, which each and everyone of us can directly impact by using digital receipts. Then there are the extensions with your bank account, where a receipt is delivered directly to your bank account and attached to a transaction, right after you scan a QR code. You no longer have to worry about losing a paper receipt or its paint blurring out. Digital receipts are the new standard that brings order and convenience to our lives.

### What is so unique about fiskaly receipt?

What makes the fiskaly receipt unique is our focus on building an ecosystem of players impacting the user’s journey. I think the digital receipt is more than just a PDF. It’s about the seamless experience the user gets when shopping at a merchant who issues the fiskaly receipt. 

We do this by focusing on building a product for and with the POS vendors, and bringing it together with them as partners to the market. By getting in contact with many of the POS vendors and understanding their needs, we have a strong partner to roll out the fiskaly receipt across Europe.

Rolling out the receipt across Europe is a big goal for us, which has a strong impact on the design of our product. POS vendors should not be forced to integrate multiple services, one for each country. Rather we would like them to integrate fiskaly once, and then we grow together and expand across Europe without additional effort or development. 

From there on we are building our partner network that can be used together with the fiskaly receipt. A simple example, and in my opinion an amazing use-case, is partnerships with banks. This enables the delivery of the fiskaly receipt directly in your banking app, attached to the transaction. Thereby, you have the receipt available at all times in the exact location where you would intuitively look for it. 

Finally, we already gathered a lot of experience with our fiscalization business. All of the knowledge and insights we gained there were bundled into the fiskaly receipt, to build a highly scalable and flexible system, which can handle thousands of receipts created per second. 

### What are your learnings while working at fiskaly?

When I studied for my PhD, I visited a few conferences. My professors always told me that I should be super careful not to share my ideas with colleagues as they can snatch them and publish my ideas as theirs. Back then, I kind of accepted it. 

Then I came to fiskaly and experienced a really cooperative culture of sharing ideas and knowledge, and no backstabbing at all, which I really enjoy.

### What is challenging for you at fiskaly?

Before fiskaly, I was very much used to working alone and just figuring out solutions to problems on my own. I changed this approach to sharing ideas and discussing issues with my team in search of the best solution. I really enjoy working in a team, having people who I can rely on, and brainstorming together to come up with the best solution in the end. 

Another challenge for me is to step back from active product development, programming, which I was used to, and start communicating more. I leave programming to our experts and focus on figuring out the users’ needs and which problems we are solving. Along with that, effective communication, in and with the team, is vital. Sharing the product vision, sharing user insights, and sharing the direction we are heading in, is a new challenge that I’m really excited to tackle.

### How can you describe fiskaly’s culture?

There are three things that come to my mind. The first associations are  ‘open’ and ‘friendly’. We have this family-like culture. Every day I am super happy to come to work. I really enjoy working here with all my colleagues.

But it’s not only about a great place to work. I am also proud to say that I'm working at fiskaly as I believe that the company builds great products in addition to having a great culture.

The 3rd one is an opportunity to learn and grow. I like a good challenge and what I really enjoy in our working process is that we know the “why” and the “where”, but sometimes we don’t know the “how”. We have to figure this out on the go, be agile, come up with unique solutions, and always consider the user’s response to continue improving and doing the best we can. We are not facing obstacles or problems, we are encountering learning opportunities.

### What advice do you have for someone in your field, applying for a job at fiskaly?

If you are an ambitious responsible person, there are definitely plenty of opportunities for you at fiskaly. We always look for people who are proactive and motivated. These people are given great opportunities here. All in all, if you are willing to work in a great culture with a lot of challenging tasks, there is plenty of room for you to grow at fiskaly.

After the cancellation of EuroCIS in 2021 due to corona, the time has come - the largest trade fair for retail technology will be held on site again. **When and where?**
The popular trade fair EuroCIS will take place this year from 31st May to 2nd June at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Center. The fair building is located at Stockumer Kirchstraße 61. The fair hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on each of the three days.
